Support Milton Special Olympics with a Tim's donut this weekend

January 29, 2025

It’s a tasty way to help some special athletes.

Miltonians are encouraged to make an addition to their Tim Hortons order this coming weekend, in support of their local Special Olympics program.

All proceeds from the limited edition Special Olympics donut – a chocolate offering with vanilla frosting, rainbow sprinkles and a dollop of whipped cream – supports programs across the country.

The campaign runs from Friday, Jan. 31 to Sunday, Feb. 2.

“It’s an excellent way to not only raise funds for our programming but it’s a tremendous way to raise awareness about the importance of Special Olympics and give our athletes the spotlight they deserve,” said Milton Special Olympics Public Relations Coordinator Lauren Lamers.

Last year’s fundraiser brought in a nation-wide $884,000.

Miltonians are asked to share photos of themselves with the donut on social media channels with the hashtag ChooseToInclude to help spread the word.

Special Olympics supports can also join in the Halton Regional Police Service’s Polar Plunge on Wednesday, Feb. 5 (3 to 5 p.m.) at the Oakville headquarters in Oakville.

When signing up, participants can select Special Olympics Milton, and 75 per cent of funds raised will go directly to the local organization.

Visit PolarPlunge.ca/halton for more information, and soopolarplunge.crowdchange.ca/91595 to register.

Milton Special Olympics includes a wide variety of sports, as well as a recently-launched FUNdamentals program to teach youngsters the basics of athletics.

Aspiring Special Olympians invited to the FUNdamentals of sports

It’s a fundamental introduction to sports play, with an emphasis on that first syllable.

With coaches and assistants now in place, Milton Special Olympics is accepting applications for its soon-to-be-launched FUNdamentals program – which teaches the mechanics of positive athletic movements.

Open to kids 7 to 12 years of age with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the initiative covers basic skills like kicking, throwing, catching, striking and dribbling.

For those enjoying this challenge, it’s a springboard to the local Special Olympics’ sports – which include basketball, bocce, swimming, curling, softball, track and field and more.

“We think this can really become a staple program for younger athletes,” said coordinator and assistant coach Lauren Lamers. “This program offers these kids and their parents/caregivers a way to take part together in a fun and interactive way of developing essential movement, motor and basic athletic skills.”

The 12-week program runs Sunday afternoons (2:30 to 3:15 p.m.) from January 19 to April 13 at Milton Leisure Centre (1100 Main St.). The cost is $75 per player.
